The Clinton – Dixie match was an exciting display of toughness and athleticism. After the Lady Red Devils took the field on their home opener to the sounds of AC/DC’s Thunderstruck both teams were energized and came out fast and aggressive. With the amount of 1st half contact it looked more like a high school football game than a soccer match. At half time the score was the same as it was at the start, 0-0. That score didn’t last long after the start of the 2nd half when Freshman Rachel Vondergeest scored Clinton’s first of goal of the evening. Senior and attacking Player of the Game, Abby Collins scored two more unassisted goals to put the match out of reach. In all the attacking unit took 18 shots with 12 being on-goal. Offense aside, Clinton would not have been able to post its 3rd straight shut out without the play of their stifling defense. The defensive unit Captained by Seniors Kaitey Threat and and Ava Machione only allowed two shots on goal the entire evening; which Sophomore Keeper Susanna Frazier defended with ease. However, last night’s defensive standout and Defensive Player of the Game was Freshman Emily Guzman. Emily’s tenacity led to Dixie’s go to Forward being frustrated and shut down for the evening.
Last night’s win was a total team win with great execution on both sides of the pitch. The 3rd shutout victory with no loses has led to Clinton sitting on top of MaxPrep’s Class AAA Girl’s Soccer rankings. The ranking is determined through wins/loses and goals against.
The Red Devil’s next match is a home game against the Laurens Raiders on 17 Mar.
