The Clinton Red Devils Boys soccer team opened the regular season against the Newberry Bulldogs on Monday night. Newberry jumped out to an early lead with a bicycle kick goal in the 5th minute that had the Devils reeling for much of the first half, leading to a 1-0 halftime score. The Bulldogs struck again early in the second half on a breakaway goal to stretch the lead to 2-0. Just as the game seemed to be getting away from the Devils, midfielder Bradley Frazier blasted home a swerving free kick from over 30 yards out to get the Devils back into the game. This sparked a furious comeback and eventually midfielder Gray Walsh crossed the ball to forward JP Snelgrove streaking into the box to drive home the tying goal. Overtime yielded no goals, so the Devils went to penalty kicks for the second straight game. This time the ball bounced in the Devils favor, as Clinton scored 4 penalty kicks to Newberry’s 2. Clinton will return to action on Wednesday, when they host the Dixie Hornets in the home opener.
